Bioprinting education at University of California

Institution

University of California, Berkeley

Research team

Keerthana Elango and Ian Oh

Challenge

Elango and her team set out to develop a means to broaden the reach of bioprinting education, seeking to address the gaps in higher level teaching and increase the exposure to tissue engineering principles at a younger age.

Solution

This UC Berkeley team launched Bioprinting at Berkeley, a student-led initiative that takes bioprinting beyond the classroom. Each semester, they execute two to four bioprinting-related projects, from engineering design projects to creating 3D cell cultures on their INKREDIBLE+™.

Results

Bioprinting at Berkeley has flourished into a great organization, expanding into the undergraduate curriculum at the UC Berkeley Bioengineering Department. Students learn about 3D modeling, cell biology, cell culture and engineering design through both lectures and lab sections.
